Itchy Skin & Chewy Treats

Late last Thursday afternoon I noticed what looked like at first to be bug bites all over one side of Caitie's stomach and back; the bumps were relatively small and were the color of her skin. That should have been my first clue that they weren't bug bites; aren't most bug bites red in color? Anyway, I started to freak out a bit, especially when Caitie started scratching uncontrollably and the spots turned a light red and started spreading. I asked Michael to take a look; I make it sound like this was said calmly... it was more like I screamed for Michael to take a look, and upon his viewing of the mysterious skin eruption, he said he wasn't sure but it could be hives. He used to have them on occasion as a child. A call to her doctor's office was made of which we were told that it was most likely hives just as Michael had said. We were told to give her Benadryl in an amount for her age and weight, this was to help control the itching. A cool bath was suggested as well, which seemed to help. Caitie would stay in the tub for a length of time, and once she was out, the places that stayed covered with water the whole time disappeared, but new spots in a different area would soon emerge; she even had spots on her face and ears, poor thing. I gave her several baths since it seemed to help. But as time went on, the new spots started to become one big welt. She suffered with the hives from late Thursday afternoon until late Friday night. We had planned to take her to the doctor's office on early Saturday morning, but when the alarm went off and we checked her for spots, they were all gone, so we cancelled the appointment. She has been free of the hives ever since. We aren't sure what caused the hives; we think it might have been a reaction to a bug bite or some strawberries she ate. It wasn't long after eating the strawberries that the hives occurred. She's eaten them before, but maybe she has since become allergic to them. We plan to take her to an allergist to have an allergy skin test done; she had this done a couple of years ago, of which they said she wasn't allergic to anything at that time, but something may have changed since them.

What does one do for someone with hives? Why make Rice Krispies Treats, of course. So that's what we did on Friday afternoon. I burned the butter, nothing new there, and I only ended up adding half the amount of Rice Krispies cereal called for, but the chewy treats turned out pretty good.

Caitie couldn't wait to try one. I told her about the burned butter, but she didn't care; I guess she's getting used to burned food.

The taste test.

She seemd to like 'em... she's still eating the tasty, chewy, burned treats.

Trying to decide if she should share some with Holly-Hoo.

Here is what she had to deal with. The bumps(spots) were growing into one big welt on her back, and occurred in other areas on her body as well; mostly her upper body, she only had a couple of spots on her legs.

One of the many baths I gave her during the ordeal... she's pouring a cup of water over the welts to help keep them covered with water, which seemed to help get rid of them.

Here's proof that Caitie really did like the chewy treats I made. Does she sound coached in what to say? Click 'play' button to view short video clip.
